Back in January of 2021 I was finally able to finish reading ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ by Delia Owens. I could go on and on about how much I adore this book… but I’ll save it for the podcast. Let’s just say it was such a refreshing first novel to read after having a baby and being so busy adjusting to mom life. I was so excited about the story that I was chatting with my husband about it after the little one was abed. During the conversation, we started reminiscing on a time that I tried to join a book club.
When we first moved to North Carolina- I wanted to find friends and make connections with people. I thought that there was no better way to do this than to join a local book club. Lo and behold, I found one that was reading one of my all time favorite novels, ‘All the Light We Cannot See’ by Anthony Doerr. So, I signed up for the book brunch discussion and got to re-reading. I compiled notes and stickies… and well, you get the idea. Flash forward to the brunch. I end up being the ONLY one to even bring the book with me. With my copy thick and bulging with sticky notes nonetheless. No one wanted to discuss the book. To add salt to the wound- no one even ordered a mimosa. AT A LADIES BRUNCH. I digress…
Back to January 2021- my husband and I are laughing about how hysterically tragic my attempt to join a book club was. And then he said: “Wouldn’t it be cool to just start your own? It could be like… Lone Mama Book Club.” It made us both pause and say… ‘well, wait a hot minute. That name actually sounds intriguing.’
In my heart I know that I am not the only woman out there who has felt isolated. I’m not the only woman who has been in situations where she felt like her passions and voice were brushed off. I know I am not the only mother who sometimes feels alone on this motherhood journey.
If this resonates with any of you: I see you. Even if it doesn’t… maybe you just want another positive community that discusses some interesting topics. Either way, my entire goal with this blog and podcast is to inspire connection and conversation. To help us all see the world through different perspectives. My goal is to create a safe space for us to share our voices, and, of course, to read some wonderful books.
